A STUDY IN TAILORING

Organza pea coat
with patch pockets,
quilted silk sleeves,
and shoulder pads

DESCRIPTION

In a senior year course we researched traditional tailoring techniques. I decided to explore the use of padding in tailored jackets, specifically the shoulder pads. I also took inspiration from other padding in a very different type of outerwear, the bed jacket.

From this research I made a sheer organza pea coat with a silk quilted underlayer, including quilting my own shoulder pads, therefore combining feminine sleepwear with a masculine tailored coat. After constructing the jacket, I overdyed the whole piece pink, creating an aged effect in the silk padding referencing my vintage inspiration.
